Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp added to Canadian Olympic golf team
The duo will be going to their third Olympics together.
Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp were nominated to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Monday, named to Canada’s golf team together for the third time in a row.
The pair qualified for Team Canada based on their position on the Official World Golf Rankings at the close of the Olympic qualification period. That period came to an end after the final round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship on Sunday. Henderson finished tied for 22nd at the event, while Sharp missed the cut. At the close of the qualification period, Henderson sits 14th on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking and Sharp is 292nd.
A 13-time winner on the LPGA Tour, including two majors, Henderson is Canada’s most successful golfer ever. She has had five top-10 finishes in 14 LPGA Tour starts in 2024, and is the only Canadian woman to win Canada’s national Junior (2012), Amateur (2013) and National Open Championships (2018).
She finished tied for seventh at Rio 2016, Canada’s best Olympic finish in women’s golf, before tying for 29th at Tokyo 2020.
“Any time you can go and represent your country it’s a very proud moment,” said Henderson in a press release. “To be able to wear the Maple Leaf and go to Paris is really exciting for me.”
Sharp is a long-time LPGA Tour member, making the cut in three of four starts this season, and has 16 career top-10 finishes in her career. She also had five top-10 results on the Epson Tour in 2023, including a win at the Champions Fore Change Invitational, and she won the ORORO PGA of Canada Women’s Championship in last year.
She earned a bronze medal at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, and is now heading to a third-consecutive Olympics.
“Reaching the Olympics for a third time was a huge goal of mine coming into this year and I am extremely proud to have achieved it,” said Sharp in a press release. “Representing Canada is the highest honour I’ve had in my career.”
Henderson and Sharp will look to become the first Canadian women to win an Olympic medal in the sport. The women’s golf tournament at Paris 2024 will take place from August 7-10 at Le Golf National.
The Canadian men’s team was announced last week, with Nick Taylor and Corey Conners earning the two spots.
